Production Art position at Zulily. Creating digital content, graphics, illustration and photo editing for e-commerce fashion products.
Zulily is a large-scale online retailer specializing in women’s and childrens clothing. The structure is of a ‘deal site’, featuring specialized brands or categories of clothing at discounted rates. Being a completely online retailer, Zulily seeks to create an addictive, fun and exciting experience for its users.
Zulily’s content is viewed through a responsive website portal and through iOS and Android applications.
Content, content content! The Zulily company motto is ‘a new site every day’ which means that new content, new graphics, new illustrations and animations, NEW STUFF goes up on the site every day.
As a designer in this environment, at any given time, there are 5-10 projects for to work on simultaneously. These tend to have very short lead times and tight deadlines, due to business and site challenges and coordination with in-house copywriters, photographers and merchandisers.
The creative challenge is taking minimal instruction, self-starting and getting designs as close to operational on the first try.
The business challenge is in working with respected brands like Free People, Rockport, Juicy Couture and True Religion.
As a production designer, my role was to deal with various small to medium treatments on the website and mobile application. These included HP size content, interrupter, banners and other creative content to help push sales of various retail events and for various brands.
Designed containers that housed product photos. Created scale-able in multiple sizes in order to work well on mobile, tablet and web-based viewing.
These were often built together in categories like “swimwear” or by brand like “Carters”.
Combined treatments of any size with photographic elements, type and added graphics. Usually for special events, these would contain fewer, more specific products tied to the mood or feeling of the design.
The definition of production art; these are single tiled events to be sent via email or through our mobile application to push and 18-hour deal. Challenges here were space and content, keeping the product the focus while giving enough information to create interest. Zulily would run 3-5 of these per day.
